Finance Friday: Why You Need to Budget

Background image from http://www.moneymanagement.org/

Okay, scratch that. This isn't really about budgeting. Well, we're still gonna talk about personal finance, but I'm loosely using the term "budget" to refer to handling your money correctly.

So why do you need to handle your money the correct way? I mean, why bother if you're going to get paid in another two weeks' time? This is precisely the mindset that you need to get rid of - unless you want a paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle. In Filipino, isang kahig isang tuka. Unless that's precisely your plan (seriously!), please consider these reasons why you need to handle your money wisely beginning today:

1. Because you owe it to yourself.

Let me tell you a secret: budgeting or handling money wisely isn't as restrictive as it sounds. Sure, it can be hard at first especially if you need to get rid of many bad money habits - they are, indeed, a bad habit to break. However, it's called financial FREEDOM for a reason.

a. Because you shouldn't have to worry about money.

I haven't achieved that ultimate status yet, but this early, I'm already reaping little rewards here and there. For example, I don't have debts of any sort. If one of my stuff at home breaks (such as my blender, my camera, and Yuri's crib, well almost), because I have a little bit of cash saved, I can easily replace them. No debt or installment plans needed.

b. Because you don't need to keep up with the Joneses.

For me, the best part about instilling good money habits is never having to worry about paying for something I don't afford. I don't anymore bother with keeping up with the latest trends and gadgets because I try to live within and below my means.

c. Because you need to be faithful with little before you can handle the large.

Apart from that, if you aim to live a more comfortable life, you need to be faithful with the finances you are handling now (Matthew 25:23). I believe we get even more blessed if we achieve the right amount of wisdom to handle the upgrade. Now it's no wonder why lottery winners lose all their money so fast: they haven't gone through the test of being faithful with little.

d. Because what you are in the future depends on what you do NOW.

To be completely upfront, I've never heard of anyone with bad money habits who became truly successful in life. There was never a gambler or a squanderer who lived a truly successful life. And before you tell me about tycoons and politicians, what I mean by "true success" is personal, financial, and relational success. The works. If you want a bright future for yourself and for your family, the first step begins now.

It's very liberating once you realize you're not a slave of money after all. Au contraire, money should be your slave! And this is a benefit you should not deny yourself.

2. Because you owe it to other people.

Have you ever heard of the saying, "Live simply so that others may simply live?" I never understood this saying until I got into personal finance. Slowly but clearly, I began to understand it. We are stewards of God's blessings. We often say this but don't take it to heart: God blesses other people through us. How? Through the money we earn!

It was a "duh" moment for me. Some people need to depend on other people just for their basic needs. Fortunately, many of us are blessed to have more than what we need. Unfortunately, the extra money we have goes to financing our wants.

Congratulations! You just made Henry Sy even richer!

Think about this: how many people could have been fed by the money you used to buy the latest iPhone model or for that payday shopping spree? One? Twenty? The number doesn't really count; what counts is that we selfishly prioritize upgrading our lifestyles over feeding a hungry mouth.
Mark 10:21
Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
It's so sad when God's blessings do not go to those who really need them. That's why the call toward wise money management should not be ignored.

3. Because you owe it to God.

Yuri-isms: Funny and Sweet Anecdotes

The photo above has absolutely no connection to this post (nor do the other photos below). I just especially love that photo because I caught Yuri mid-fall. I was about to take his photo outside the house when he ran toward me, lost his balance, and I was able to capture it on camera! He looks like a break-dancer, no? Hahaha. I love it!

Anyway, here are the different "conversations" I've had with Yuri that I want to remember:
What does the utot say?
Me making large farty noises while Yuri laughs
Me: Pooooot!
Yuri: Hahaha!
Me: Brrrroooot!
Yuri: Hahaha!
Me: Ikaw naman. What does the utot say?
Yuri: (silent for a while, after 5 minutes)
Pft.
Naks! Demure! (More laughing ensues)

Yuri takes book from me and intentionally turns it upside down:
Me: Baliktad baby
Yuri returns it to its right position. With a tiny voice, he says: Tama?
Me: Yes baby!
Yuri: Yeys! Ayus!

One night, before sleeping, Yuri lined up all his stuffed toys to rub noses with them. In Pinoy-speak, nose to nose.
Yuri: Ader (Tigger), nose nose. *rubs noses*
Yuri: Pooh, nose nose. *rubs noses*
Yuri: Jawi (Jollibee), nose nose. *rubs noses*
Yuri: Opus (Octopus), nose nose.
Then, before he could rub noses with Octopus, he turned to me in shock.
Yuri: Opus uya (wala) nose!
This is the stuffed toy in question:

We recently started selling load here in the neighborhood, and since I was home every day, I was in charge of the actual selling.

It is a good thing I have an assistant...
Me double-checking the customer's number before sending the load: 0922--
Yuri: Tama, tama!

When Yuri was a little newborn baby, I used to sway him back and forth in my arms while humming the lullaby my dad sung to us when we were young (that's around 30 years since he started singing it to my older brother).

Home Office Inspiration for Small Spaces

This morning, as I sat down at my desk tucked away in a little corner in my parent's house, I thought about what my "home office" in our future house would look like.

I like this little corner of mine, but because it's in my parents' house, my desk inevitably gets filled with random stuff that are not mine, which include but are not limited to extension wires, chargers, isopropyl alcohol, tissue, and the like. In short, my desk is not as cute and Pinterest-worthy as I hope it could be!

Of course, mere thinking led to more Googling, and here are the photos that caught my fancy:

Little corner in the kitchen:

Cute little girl-alcove (female version of the man-cave?):

Functional shelves against the wall:

Unassuming closet by night, and - surprise! - feminine home office by day:

Shelving units and a portable (at least I think so) desk:

Another version of the alcove (I prefer this because it's more romantic):

And my current ultimate favorite (actually, this has been my favorite peg since last year) - the secretary desk:

Which are your favorites? Do you also have home-office pegs? Do share!

Oplan Balik Alindog - Updates

Hi! Happy Monday! How was your weekend? Mine was uneventful, but I did spend my Sunday eating as much as I could eat.

You see, I just unofficially declared Sunday my cheat day. Yes, I'm serious about losing weight, but I still love eating! (There must be something done about this.)

Before you get the idea that I'm making an update because I've already lost weight, well, I don't think I already have. Ang hirap! When you plan to diet and exercise with a toddler around, it's so hard! Or at least in my case.

So that you gain a bit of an idea as to how my weight loss journey has progressed so far, let me tell you the story through photos.

On good days, I'm able to exercise while Yuri is still asleep...
At first, I tried my old style of exercising (a lot of running in place and jumping jacks, basically cardio). Brings back memories of my summer days during high school when I faithfully exercised!

It would be nice to have a thigh-gap...

I also tried the 7-minute exercise app on Android, and, man, was I out of breath. I'm seriously out of shape!

Post-exercise selfie

However, I recently found out that exercises like this strengthen the body but do not affect our metabolism. I also noticed that after doing it, I was only dizzy and I did not really feel the burn, you know? So it's back to boring old cardio routine for me!

On some other (equally good) days, though, when I begin exercising, this happens:
And this:
Leave me alone, Yuri:
Just kidding.

And, finally, on weekends,I wake up with the intent to exercise but cannot because here's what I see:
An intruder!
Make that intrudersss!

Now, for food intake, I still count calories (but still often overeat). I've switched from my mobile app to MyFitnessPal because it has a lot of features.

For example, a lot of Filipino foods are in their database, unlike my mobile app where I often had to choose what seems to resemble what I just ate. This led to incorrect readings.
I also liked how it also tracks my water intake. I seriously need to improve on this area, too!

(Hopefully, my accountability partners would create accounts din.)

As for my diet itself, like exercising, there are good days...

Of Answered Prayers, Salvation, and Little Sisters

When I first gave my life to Jesus in 2010, one of my most fervent prayers was salvation for my family. I backslid and returned to my old ways, but here I am now with renewed faith and hope in my Savior. Four years later, I cry out for the same thing: salvation for my loved ones.

The most unexpected thing happened last Saturday. My sister wanted to use the laptop and didn't ask permission from my parents, so she asked me. My parents were out so I was the "person in authority." Yes, kailangang naka-quotation marks. I allowed her on the condition that she only uses the laptop for 2 hours. She agreed.

More than 2 hours passed and she still wanted to use the laptop; she wanted to extend. Knowing her tendencies to get addicted, I stopped her. She got mad. I resorted to texting Mama, and she got even madder. To cut the long story short, she didn't speak to me for the rest of the afternoon.

By 4pm, we were talking again. If you have a sister, you'd know how these fights go. Meanwhile, I was still mad inside because she called me "liar" earlier when all I did was tell Mama the truth (long story). Still, God told me to show compassion to my younger sister, so I did - even though it was against my human nature.

(In hindsight, if I didn't listen to God then, I think the next events wouldn't have happened!)

That night, she asked for my help for her assignment. I was already fully recovered (much thanks to God's grace) and willingly helped. The assignment was to look for 3-5 Bible verses to turn into bookmarks. I thought to myself, "Oh, this might be a nice way to encourage her to read the Bible." But God has an even greater plan.

Since my sister is not much of a reader, I Googled websites containing verses that are made easy to understand for children. The page loaded and I allowed her to look for verses that spark her interest.

Lo and behold, this was the first verse she chose:
Acts 16:31
They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.”
When she showed it to me, it felt like I was bopped on the head. Well, it wasn't like that really, but I strongly felt God's urge for me to share the Gospel to my sister. It's like God was saying, "This is it, Maan. My divine intervention! Go for it! I'll be with you."

Wow, Lord. You continue to amaze me. I have asked for an opportunity to share the Gospel with my sister, and there it was, handed to me on a silver platter!

As if on cue, my ever-curious sister asked me, "Ate, anong ibig sabihin ng saved?"
