I'm probably the only working, internet-active 20-something who never had even a taste of Cookie Butter. Or cronuts. Or whatever Instagram is making popular now.
It's simple. I just can't justify paying around 500 bucks for a jar of bread spread. I used to pride myself on being aware of trends before they become trendy (does that make sense) simply because I read a lot. In fact, I have wanted to try cookie butter early last year, back when virtually no one resells it in the country, and I wanted my friend, Teena, in Vietnam to look for a jar of Biscoff for me.
I was ecstatic to know that many resellers have been bringing it into the Ph Islands na. However, I balked when I saw the price of one jar. Seriously? No thanks!
Am I a cheapskate or am I only being practical? How can we justify the price of cookie butter? For the price of one jar of cookie butter, I can buy around three jars of peanut butter, which I love. I can also buy maybe two jars of Nutella, which I also love. I can buy a bag of Toblerone chocolates, which I love. I can even buy Yuri a set of clothes already! In other words, there are more things I love that I can buy with the price of a cookie butter jar.
Let me clarify one thing: I can afford cookie butter. That's not saving grace; it's the truth! I can afford a jar or two. But I choose not to because, again, I can't justify buying it. To be honest, my own income is already more than enough. Then, Job also sends a considerable amount of money each month. But I still can't justify the price of these uso foods.
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not the uptight, super thrifter type. I shop on impulse and I buy stuff I don't need. I just think I'd rather spend my money on something tangible (clothes, shoes, toys) or on something growing (investments) than on something that would end up in the toilet bowl anyway. #sorrynotsorry
It also doesn't have anything to do with my being a mom. I've long been like this. You can ask my friends; I always opt for cheaper meals!
Finally, the ultimate reason why I can't bring myself to buying cookie butter from resellers is that they are so overpriced! I mean, we know how much cookie butter costs in the States. I'll just wait until the trend is over and the price goes lower siguro? :-)
PS: I discovered this great recipe from Pepper.ph. It uses lengua de gato for a homemade cookie butter. Promising, right? I wanna try it! Here's my justification:
- I'm not sure how much a pack of lengua de gato cookies costs, but I'm pretty sure it's around the P100 mark. More or less. I hope I'm right.
- Oil is not an issue; we always have canola oil. That's it!
- I can even spend another P150 for a pretty Ball Mason jar, which I can reuse many times.
The total cost is far less than a jar of cookie butter, which I'm not even sure I would like! I would certainly try the recipe above soon.
Now, if I can just justify to Job the price of this books and toys organizer.

It costs ₱ 17,249.00, a hefty price, but it looks durable, diba? Not to mention cute. Oh, and while we're at it, this personalized book, too. :-P
