This year I was not as prepared. I did try to prepare but it slipped my mind. So now, days after the real SONA, let me give you SOTA or State of the Toddler Address where I unabashedly brag about my kid in the guise of "reporting."
Here it goes. Don't say I didn't warn you!
2 years and 4 months later, we're still at it. Sometimes I want to wean him off and sometimes I don't.
When he was younger, he just tolerates the readings. Now he pulls his own books and tries to "read" them himself. He has favorites now, too. Bookworm mama approves.
And he complains when I give him a "small" serving of his favorite food.
- The boy loves to sing. Sometimes I hope he's a little Darren in the making. Here's a video of him singing, if you can call it that:
As much as he loves singing, he still cries when he hears "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star." I hate to see what his reaction would be when he hears "The Prayer."
- At 2, like most toddlers, he's beginning to know how to argue. For example, if he wants to call an obviously white car "red," there's no way you can say it is white. You need to agree it's red (even when he himself knows it's white).
He speaks a mixture of English, Tagalog, and Bisaya. I don't mind.
- He can identify with characters in the story.
He usually points to the main character, usually the smallest and cutest in a bunch, and says "Ito Yuri." Later on, he'll change his mind and say he is the biggest character.
Maybe it's just me but he obviously prefers kids' encyclopedias over storybooks. He is fascinated with animals, especially with "wild" ones. He also adores space books like the one above.
- He still weighs 11 kilograms. He's still 84 cm tall.
I couldn't care less but sometimes I wonder, is it possible for a baby to not gain weight at all? Because that's Yuri. And I think his height is stalling. I want him to be taller! I'm tempted to buy Cherifer tuloy.
- His feet grew a size up.
His shoes are size 7, but very soon, he'll need to wear size 8. I need to buy a new set of footwear again!
Well, these are not really real "jokes," but he likes telling things that he knows aren't true. Unclear? I know. For example, he gets a hairbrush and says, "Pwede kain hairbrush?" I get surprised kunyari, and then he laughs and says "Hindi!"
I really hope you get it because I find toddler humor adorable.
Months ago, we got him wooden puzzles that he can't, for the life of him, figure out. Now they're too simple for him. Help!
Aside from cars and balls, his favorite toys are these plastic plates. He loves serving food for two, sometimes for him and a partner, sometimes for his toys:
His favorite time of the day would be at bedtime. If he's not sleepy yet, he turns to me and asks, "Ano kwento mo?" Of course he's not asking me. That is my cue to ask him. So I say, "Yuri, ano kwento mo?" Then he tries his very best to report how his day went.
- Attempts to pray by saying thank you for anything and everything that pops into his mind.
This includes thanking God for every person he meets during the day, including yayas and the people who deliver filtered water.
- He now uses the "big potty" aka toilet bowl. I love it because it means one less thing to clean (no need to clean the potty chair). He's still not potty-trained by night because mama's a chicken.
Reasons why Yuri cries: he wants to sleep, he doesn't want to sleep, he wants cookies, he only wants chocolate cookies, he can't stand chocolate cookies,he wants to read, he only wants the green book, hd doesn't want the green book.
In conclusion...
Yuri is just like any other toddler: frustrating and exasperating in some moments and bright and wonderful and amazing and adorable and crazy lovable most of the time!
