4 Not-So-Typical Uses For Your Baby Monitor

I'm contemplating on buying a baby monitor. I used to think we didn't need it, but I guess that was the case when Y was still a newborn. However, today, it is a different case. The young one is now beginning to explore and even though I want to stick to Y like glue all the time, I can't.

The desire actually sparked when I first read this post. I realized that a baby monitor could actually be useful, especially when we're ready to move to a new house and Y is already a "full-blown" toddler. Kailangan mag-ipon! Hahaha!

Now, I just read an article about the other uses of baby monitors. I'm even more convinced! To know what these four "not-so-typical" uses are, please read the guest post below by fellow mom, Karen:
__________________

I loved my baby monitor when my boys were newborns. Then I didn't need to make sure I could hear them all night after they were sleeping through the night. But I am never one to sell anything before I make sure I cannot use it for something else. Let me tell you, I probably use my baby monitor more now than I every used to when my boys were babies! Here are my 5 not-so-typical favorite uses for our baby monitor.

1. Listening to my children. I love my relatives and friends to bring their kids over to play with our kiddos. But sometimes, those children are allowed to say some things that we don't want our kids saying. My solution? Put the baby monitor receiver in the playroom! I can go to my bedroom to "use the restroom" and make sure everyone is playing well and not being mean or rude. This way, I can even address language that isn't completely terrible later on after the friends leave and make sure my kids understand those are words we don't use in our home.

2. Sunbathing in peace. I did this all the time when I had one baby, but now, I like to still have a little alone time out in the backyard to soak in some rays in peace and quiet. My older son just lays down for rest time, but sometimes he gets an idea in his head that he can get up out of bed and play games if I am outside and busy. With the baby monitor, I can make sure he is at least resting quietly and not up and around when he should be laying down. Also, if anything happens to either child while I am outside, I can make sure I am able to go inside and help them immediately.

3. Washing machine notifier. Unless you have a new, ultra fancy washing machine, it probably does not have a beeper that sounds when it is finished like your dryer does. I have learned to find a way around that! I just put my baby monitor receiver next to the washing machine and turn it pretty loud, so when the washing machine is finished, my monitor goes noticeably silent. Nothing is nastier than a mildewed load of laundry sitting in your washing machine!

4. Burglar monitoring. This has been our most useful use for our baby monitor. Our monitor is actually through Allen home security, and it has a video feed that we can access 24/7 through any wireless device or smartphone. So even when we are not home, from anywhere in the world we can view our house and make sure everything inside is safe and sound. Even when we are home, we have our smartphone in hand and can always watch the video feed in the kid's playroom or bedrooms. Burglars know our house is armed and has video surveillance with our home security, so that is one extra level of protection to keep our house as safe as possible.

Get your baby monitor out of closet and start using it creatively around your house. Thanks so much for reading, and please comment below with your unconventional use for your baby monitor!

Press Release: Wyeth|Nutrition: Nurture. Inspire. Give. Campaign

Last Thursday, June 6, 2013, Wyeth|Nutrition’s corporate promo, Nurture. Inspire. Give., was launched. This campaign has the primary goal of promoting literacy and teach kids to value education. With this promo, every notebook consumer gets, Wyeth will match it to give to underprivileged schoolchildren through their partner, Synergeia Foundation. What’s so special about these notebooks are their designs which are artworks made by schoolchildren themselves.

You can learn more about this campaign by reading the press release below:

A note for the future
Wyeth Nutrition commits to support Philippine
education of underprivileged youth

MANILA, Philippines; 6 June 2013 – It was Pablo Picasso who said – “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.” He may have said this decades ago, but these words still ring true until now. After all, how many children – all brimming with promise and creativity – just fade away when they grow up?

Today, Wyeth Nutrtion and Synergeia Foundation are working hand-in-hand to do their part by nurturing future generations through education. And they’re doing it through a simple but ingenious way – by giving notebooks to thousands of underprivileged schoolchildren all over the country.

“A notebook may not seem anything special to some, especially for kids who have had the benefit of growing up with cellphones, tablets and gaming consoles; but for a same-aged child, who’s not as fortunate, a simple notebook can represent his canvas for the future,” says Richard Arboleda, Associate Director for Communications, Wyeth Philippines.

Arboleda shares that what makes the notebooks extra special are their designs, which were specially made by three gifted artists who are schoolchildren themselves.  The child artists are Allie Arroyo who began painting at 5 and is now improving her craft under noted artists Bambi Manosa and Elaine Herbosa; Antonio Tordesillas, who has already had a solo exhibit at the age of 14; and Marco Flores who hails from the art capital of the Philippines, Angono, Rizal.
“Our aim is to promote literacy and to encourage children to be creative and value education; we are able to achieve that through the gift of these three children. Access to notebooks leads to more writing and reading, which then fosters an increase in proficiency,” says Arboleda.

From June 15 to August 15, Wyeth Nutrition and Synergeia Foundation will be launching the Nurture.Inspire.Give. campaign. Here, any purchase of Aqiva (900g), Progress Pre-school Gold (900g and 1.6kg), Promil Pre-school (900g and 1.6kg), Bonakid Choco Boost (800g), Bonakid Pre-school (900g, 1.2kg and 1.6kg), Enercal Plus (900g), or ProMama (900g) comes with a free limited edition notebook and a scratch card. The scratch card has a promo code, which one can use to register through SMS to be eligible for the raffle promo and to enable a child to receive his/her own notebook.
Wyeth Nutrition will give away P20,000 worth of gift certificates for school supplies and an educational gift pack worth P5,000 to 50 raffle winners on July 17 and another 50 winners on August 16.

Wyeth Nutrition and Synergeia Foundation pledge to give away notebooks equal to the total number of registrants. 10,000 registrants would mean 10,000 notebooks to be given away to less fortunate schoolchildren in the Philippines.

“No one understands children better than children themselves; and it is because of this that we chose to have Marco, Allie and Antonio design the notebooks,” notes Arboleda. “Looking at their designs, it’s no exaggeration to say that we may be very well looking at the future of Philippine art.”

Arboleda is also proud of Wyeth Nutrition’s partnership with Synergeia Foundation, which implements programs to improve basic education to nearly 1.5 million schoolchildren in 250 municipalities in the Philippines. Since 2011, the organizations have collaborated to implement feeding programs and inspire employee volunteerism.  “What they do is travel to the remotest barangays in the country to work with communities in order to upgrade basic education – and that’s why we’re sure that help really reaches those who really need it.

“It’s our hope that this initiative will serve to inspire and somehow influence the future of children. This is, after all, what Wyeth Nutrition is all about – nurturing generation after generation of Filipinos.”

Yesterday’s Dream. During Wyeth Nutrition’s launch of “Nurture. Inspire. Give.” through the Synergeia Foundation, students from Bagong Tanyag Elementary School performed, “Yesterday’s Dream,” as a way to say thank you to Wyeth Nutrition and artists, Marco Flores and Antonio Tordesillas, for presenting them with the limited edition notebooks designed by the young artists.

GIVE. From one student to another. Young artist, Marco Flores, presented notebooks with his design to pupils from Bagong Tanyag Elementary School.

A note for the future. The little girl from the left shows off her new notebook to her classmates. The covers of the notebooks given away by Wyeth Nutrition bear artworks of other young students as part of “Nurture. Inspire. Give.”

An Inspiring Partnership. Inspire. Give”. Wyeth Nutrition and Synergeia Foundation are working hand-in-hand with this promo – nurturing future generations through education. Behind them are the artworks of the three young artists, Antonio Tordesillas, Marco Flores and Allegria Arroyo which will be the covers of the notebooks that will be given to underprivileged schoolchildren.

Health Insurance for Single Moms

I am a single mom - for the moment. I'm looking forward to the day I get married (awww!), but for now, legally, I'm a single parent. This is why I still have to look for the best options because let's face it: it's hard to be a parent, and it's twice harder to be a single one.

Late last year, I became interested in personal finance. It's a must not only for single moms but also for every parent, right? Aside from the basics of saving and investing, I also immersed myself in learning about more financial vehicle, such as health insurance.

Today, we're going to learn more about health insurance, particularly for the interest of single mothers. Below is a guest post from Ms. Brenda Panin.

Health Insurance for Single Mothers

Since 2007, there have been changes to the private health insurance regulations and single mothers pay less than couples with children. Some policies could be up to 25 per cent cheaper depending on the coverage. For those who have been paying full family rates who are now a single parent, and for those who have not had private health insurance before, now is the time to consider single mother health insurance. Different companies offer different coverage at different prices. It will save money to compare the policies offered to find the cheapest rate for the required coverage.

What is Covered?

Private health insurance is the best choice because if any member of the family is admitted to hospital, there will be options including choosing the doctor. The waiting time is shorter and, with some policies, the date for the surgery can be chosen. Most standard hospital policies cover:

• A choice of private hospital and the possibility of a private room
• Hospital costs including physician and specialists’ fees, anaesthetist fees, surgery and accommodation will be covered
• Prescription medicines
• Tests

How to Choose a Single Mother Policy?

Before selecting a health care insurance policy, all the health needs of the family should be considered. It is not necessary to pay more for coverage that will never be used, but it is also important to have coverage for vital health issues that can arise.

Some of the health issues to consider are:

• General Dental covers regular check-ups, fillings, preventative procedures and x-rays
• Orthodontic is for straightening and correcting teeth and jaw alignment including devices such as braces and plates. These issues should be corrected as early as possible
• Optical includes lenses and frames as well as contact lenses. Medicare only pays for eye tests but not for glasses
• Physiotherapy is for developmental and neurological disorders to keep muscles and joints moving properly
• Podiatry is for children that may have abnormalities that become evident when they start to walk. Podiatry can treat limping, stiffness, abnormally shaped toes, pigeon toed or out-toed and other issues with the feet

This coverage is considered extra by most insurance companies, but they are essential. Children need a lot of care and attention to their health and development to ensure that they are able to grow as well as possible. For some people, treatment for illnesses or issues such as crooked teeth or poor eyesight is expensive and can only be treated if the single mother has private health insurance.

How to Reduce the Cost of Single Mother Health Insurance?

Single mothers need all the help they can get when paying for private health insurance. The first rule for getting a good policy at a good price is to compare the different coverage from several insurance companies.

If an annual payment is made, the rate can be locked in and will not change when the insurance companies make their annual 5 per cent rate rise.

If payment is made by direct debit, many companies will give a five per cent discount on the cost of the premium.

It is better to find out in advance before being admitted to a hospital for treatment if the doctor has an agreement with your insurance provider in the event there is a gap in the amount the doctor charges and the amount the medical benefits will cover. In some cases, the gap payment can be avoided.

Single mothers should use the full benefits that her health insurance coverage allows. In this way, she will recoup the cost of the health insurance.

DIY Beauty: Honey Lemon Body Scrub

Here in the Philippines, we have four seasons: hot days, rainy days, hotter days, and rainier days. #corny

Hehehe. Please forgive my lame attempt at a joke. Now, we, Filipinas, know for sure that whatever season it is, we need to take care of our skin. Of course, our regimens should change according to the weather (e.g. more moisturizing is needed in the colder months).

But the basics stay the same: cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize. I, for one, often forget about the second step! This is mainly because I couldn't find a body scrub that I like. If you're like me, I'm sure you would find this guest post by Ms. Kendra Thornton interesting!

Ring In The Spring With A DIY Body Scrub

Spring is the time when I get out my gardening supplies and start rejuvenating my yard. I replenish the annuals and tend to the perennials, ensuring that their winter coats are off in preparation for full bloom. However, it is important that I do not forget about myself. The flowers are not the only thing that can blossom in the spring. After dealing with dry skin and the coldness of winter, it is time for some pampering. Why do we only find time to relax and refresh a few times throughout the year? I use spring as a reminder to take some time for myself.

One of my favorite ways to relax and restore my own body has always been at the spa. An added perk to my job in the travel sphere has been access to the beautiful spa facilities located around the globe. And after a few days of travel and nights on planes spent tossing and turning, I am in need of an invigorating refresher! One of my favorite visits was to Honolulu, Hawaii at the Halekulani Resort and Spa, ranked as one of Honolulu’s top hotels. Their signature body scrub left my skin renewed and revitalized allowing me to present my best self despite the toll travel can take on the body and mind.

Now at home in Chicago as a full-time mama, I often think of these spa days and how refreshed and re-energized they always left me - something I would love to achieve with three little ones at home. I wanted some me-time in my normal life ...

So in honor of my time at the Halekulani, I recreated this refreshing honey and lemon body scrub in the comfort of my own home! You do not need any fancy products to pamper yourself, just a few natural ingredients and some creativity.

Honey Lemon Body Scrub

You’ll need:

· 4 tablespoons of honey

· 2 tablespoons of lemon juice

· 2 tablespoons of olive oil

· 3 tablespoons of sea salt

Directions:

Step 1: Combine the honey and olive oil mixing with a spoon or rubber spatula.

Step 2: Combine the lemon juice and sea salt in a separate bowl, ensuring that the salt and lemon juice are fully incorporated. The salt and lemon should begin to form a thicker consistency at which point you may add the oil and honey mixture.

Step 3: Blend well and gently apply the scrub to dampened skin. As you apply, begin to massage scrub around selected area; for those stubborn and dry patches, you may use slightly more pressure.

Step 4: Remove excess scrub with warm water. I allow my skin to dry and then apply my favorite moisturizer.

Whether you’re a full-time mom, a working lady, or anywhere in between, you have to make some time for yourself. This scrub lets you take care of yourself and your responsibilities at the same time. So ring in spring this year with some you time and a DIY honey lemon body scrub!

Six Uses for a Bank Loan

Finance-savvy individuals aim to be financially free. It's a must to maintain an emergency fund in the bank (or wherever the funds will stay liquid) so that we have enough money for - you guessed it - emergencies. But what if we haven't prepared enough? Experts say it is wise to keep at least 6 months worth of your income. But what if the emergency entails more than that?

There are also some things we need to acquire which we might not immediately afford. Take note that I said "need" and not "want." A house falls under a need; a new gadget does not.

This is where a bank loan comes in (provided you pay it as soon as you can, of course!). Let's read this guest post on the six uses of a bank loan.

Image from zuuply.com
People often take out bank loans to help them with a variety of purposes; however, you might not realize all of the uses for such a loan. What are six of the ways a bank loan can be utilized?

For an Education

Attending university certainly comes with a large cost, but bank loans can help to pay for schooling. Once the student has finished his or her studies, the loan will start to be paid back in small increments over time. Some parents might look into these loans if they want to send their children to private or boarding school.

For a New Car

Chugging along in a broken-down car every day to work or school is not only annoying, but it is also really dangerous. When this situation is the one you experience on a daily basis, it is time to look for a new vehicle. Taking out a bank loan gives you the opportunity to obtain the amount of money necessary or something safe.

For a House

In order to buy a house, most people need to take out a loan. Once you have secured the loan, you are able to purchase a place for your family to live in. You might wind up selling it in a few years and making a decent amount of money off of the property.

Rental Properties

Are you looking for some extra income? Do you want to have a place to live in when retirement comes around for you and your spouse? Get started on making that plan today, and you could take out a loan to buy a rental property. Throughout the year, you will be able to make a profit from it.

Home Renovations/Repairs

Instead of waiting years and years to save up enough money to add an extra bedroom onto your house, take out a loan to complete the work. In addition to finally having enough space for your family, you will also be significantly increasing the potential resale value of your home.

To Start a Charity

In certain cases, you might be able to take out a nonprofit loan from the bank, or you may be able to get a loan to finally get your charity organization started. Many people dream of opening up such a place, but they simply do not have the money to do so. Taking out a bank loan gives you the opportunity to achieve this personal goal and to create better lives for others too.

As you can now see, bank loans do not have only one purpose. Instead, these types of loans have so many different opportunities to provide to you, so get started on obtaining yours as soon as possible by clicking here. (link removed)

Guest Post: The Significance of Finance

Image from rfcng.com
The term finance is very important for a flourishing economy. It holds a great importance in the lives of individuals and business corporations. By finance, we mean to manage the funds in an economy. It involves the concept of lending and borrowing. These days, the process of lending and borrowing is also done through banks. What people do is that they deposit their money in the banks, who lend money to the other people by charging some interest for earning profits.

Importance of Finance:

  • Finance plays a very important role in corporations and organizations. Corporate finance deals with the decision making of the firms regarding the sale and purchase of assets and also aids them in investment decisions as well. Corporate finance helps in getting to know about the risks which a firm may face while investing in some specific products.

Shareholder’s dividends and equity funds are also managed with the help of corporate finance as well. Firms make their short and long term decisions with the help of corporate financing. It also helps in dealing with the taxes which an organization has to pay during its working position.

  • Business finance is regarded as the backbone of a business. A business cannot run without financing. Finance is always required in spite of the fact that your business is small, medium or is larger in size. Finance is required for establishing a product, and is required in its promotion as well. A good amount of finance is required by a firm to maintain its name in the market.

Finance is also required when a firm feels the need of expanding its business.

  • The finance department of a company deals with the entire financial requirements of a company. The financial department of the firm manages the balance sheet of the company, thus ensuring that sufficient funds are available in a firm to maintain its reputation in the market.

A financial department maintains the returns on assets and liabilities and also takes care of the profit level of the firm. The entire information regarding the working of a firm is provided to the managers by the financial department so that they can use the information for decision making. Final accounts of a firm are prepared by the financial department so that it can be presented in the annual meeting of the company.

  • Personal financing is a form of financing in which you plan for long term financial stability. This is a kind of budgeting which is planned by those people who plan to remain financially stable after their retirement. For a good planning, you need to know what you actually desire to have in your future, and where you want to live. If you know exactly what you want to do after you get retired, then you can do a very good personal budgeting.

Saving is a very important part of personal financing. Saving helps you to invest in the right places in order to secure your future.

  • Financing is very important for the economic situation of a country as well. It helps to maintain the standard of a developed country and for underdeveloped countries; it helps to plan basic economic tools for development.

  •  Personal financing depends largely on the economic stability of a country. If the conditions are bad, then people will save more in order to achieve a secured future.

Short term finance is another form of financing. Finance plays a very important role in business banking, as it is an important tool which is used for the decision makings of the firms.

Guest Post: Fashion Tips That Are Worth Checking Out!

Busy adults often forget about fashion as they concentrate on their careers. But that's alright! You can become fashionable at any age. The following article will provide you with tips to make you look better. Read on for some great tips!

Image from vogue.com
Before you spend money on extras, make sure you have the essentials covered. Purchase pieces that can work with each other and are timeless. You can easily update a simple black pencil skirt with tops and jackets yearly.

If you insist upon tucking your shirt inside your pants at all times, make sure you complement that look with a nice belt. If belts are not to your liking, try wearing a pair of suspenders. Match either your suspenders or belt with your shoes.

For boots and sandals, go with wedged heels. Wedges can make you look taller and therefore slimmer. When purchasing wedged heels, however, it is important you do not them too thick, as you may not even be able to walk in them!

A great looking purse can complement your outfit, but make sure it goes with whatever other bag you are carrying. If you carry a briefcase, it should look good with your handbag. Also, make sure you don't carry two different kinds of bags.

Keep yourself informed on the latest and hottest fashion trends by subscribing to a fashion magazine. They provide photos of what is trendy at the moment, and you will also be able to use the ideas to develop your own style.

Pay attention to the fabrics your outfits are made of. Look on the tag, it should list the materials used in making the garment. Your perfect fit might not be right after a couple of washes if you don't find the right material. There is no reason to invest in inferior clothing!

If you're carrying extra weight in your belly, avoid fitted clothing. Clingy, too-tight fabrics will only highlight the areas you wish to minimize. Wear loose clothes instead that will make your figure look better.

If you have frizzy hair, avoid rubbing it to dry with a towel. This can stretch and damage wet hair, encouraging frizz. Rather, just wrap your hair and squeeze to take the water out. When you are satisfied with the results, unwrap it and brush the hair with a comb.

If you desire to have fuller lips, there are ways to get it without going the cosmetic surgery route. Use a bright lipstick or a shiny gloss. The reflection of the light shade will increase the fullness of your lips. Do not use dark lipstick because it thins your lips out.

Extend the life of your favorite fashion items by laundering them with care. The care label is the place to look for adding longevity to your wardrobe. Follow all the instructions to ensure your apparel stays looking its best.

Add color to your hair if you want to have a vibrant look during the summer. However, your hair needs to be healthy so that the color doesn't fade too fast. Be sure that you use a high-quality hair conditioner to protect your hair when you color it.

Subscribing to a good fashion newsletter can help you stay up to date regarding current trends as well. Doing this well ensure you are ready for every season before it hits, and will be ahead of your friends on the fashion trends.

Once you have made it through this article, you should have all the key ideas to getting the elegant look that you want. Do not allow other areas of your life prevent you from looking and feeling your best.

Help Save Green Sea Turtles Through EnviroPop App

Happy Monday, everyone! It's the start of the week, and for the workers and employees among us, it means the start of a new work week. Happy are those who are students and work in schools kasi walang pasok ngayon. Haha! But still, begin your week with good vibes!

Better yet, begin your week with a new advocacy. I'm pretty sure most of you have access to smartphones. Some of you may even have iPhones (lucky!). If you have the latter or any Apple device, I have a proposition to make. Check this post out and start advocating for Mother Nature in a fun and easy way - by using the EnviroPop App!

Cute!
Below is a guest post from AppLabs Digital Studios:

Background:

The Green Sea Turtles, famously known as Pawikan to Filipinos, are one of the most endangered marine animals in the Philippines. Not only do people catch this specific Chelonian breed for exotic soups or stew, they also slaughter the poor creature so they can turn the turtle hide into a shoe, belt, and other accessories. The idea of killing helpless marine creature for the sake of people's own frivolous gratification is just depressing.

Pattie the Pawikan

The current state of our marine biodiversity is facing serious threat not only because of man's shallow desires, but also because of the chemicals brought by man to their habitat that is the sea. PET bottles and metals like mercury or cadmium pollute the ocean which the turtles obtain when they are passing through different straits. These factors harm the green sea turtles and make their class vulnerable.

World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-Philippines) has several programs lined up which hopes to conserve the marine biodiversity and to stop endangered species from facing extinction. One of their innovative program comes in the form of an environmental application called EnviroPop. With the help from app development company AppLabs Digital Studios Inc., WWF-Philippines will be able to collect the funds that they need through app downloads and the imparted environmental awareness to users.

EnviroPop

EnviroPop is a puzzle game which features several marine animals like Pattie the Pawikan, Bobby the Butanding, and Dolly the Dolphin. The gameplay is to remove the harmful marine pollutants by tapping and swiping it away from the screen altogether. Players are given one minute to eliminate as many hazards as possible and eventually save the sea creatures.

EnviroPop also has an “Enviropedia” feature which contains facts about the endangered sea creatures and the pollutants that threaten them. Through Enviropedia, people will be informed about WWF-Philippines priorities when it comes to marine conservation. EnviroPop costs $0.99 only, and for every download of the app, profits will find its way into WWF-Philippines' marine conservation program. The app allows users to be entertained and contribute to a good cause as well.
